William Morris Snakeshead Cornflower Flame
William Morris Snakeshead Cornflower Flame
William Morris created the first version of Snakeshead in 1876. The intricately scrolling tendrils that make up the pattern's background appear to be holding in suspension the dramatic flame-like motif and alternating spiky clusters of flora.
One of Morris's favourite designs, it was named after the nodding snakes head fritillary blossoms that complemented larger, more formal themes. Morris was influenced by the colours and patterns of Indian textiles.
